Pressure Equipment Directive

Directive 2014/68/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 May 2014 on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of pressure equipment (recast) (Text with EEA relevance)

Scope

This Directive shall apply to design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure PS greater than 0.5 bar. This directive has been recently aligned to the New Legislative Framework (NLF) to simplify and improve the implementation.

Exemptions are defined in Art. 1 (2)

Regulatory activities

The Pressure Equipment Directive contains in its Annex I the Essential Requirements that a pressure equipment or assembly must meet when placed and/or put into service on the EU market. It does not indicate how these requirements must be met, thus leaving flexibility to manufacturers as regards technical solutions to be adopted. Essential Safety Requirements (Art. 6): When placing pressure equipment on the market or using them for their own purposes, manufacturers shall ensure that they have been designed and manufactured in accordance with the essential safety requirements set out in Annex I. Technical documentation (Art. 6(2)): For the pressure equipment or assemblies referred to in Art. 4(1) and (2) manufacturers shall draw up the technical documentation referred to in Annex III and carry out the relevant conformity assessment procedure referred to in Article 14. Obligations based on CLP hazard class

Yes Article 13 of the Directive provides for classification of pressure equipment based on the classification properties according to CLP Regulation. For the purposes of such classification fluids shall be divided into the following two groups: (a) group 1 consisting of substances and mixtures that are classified as hazardous in accordance with the physical or health hazard classes (b) group 2 consisting of substances and mixtures not referred in point (a)
